Which Dogs Are Most Likely to Bite?
While the majority of dogs are friendly, excited to meet humans, and safe, you never know when you’ll encounter a human-aggressive dog. However, the statistics do show that certain dogs are more likely to bite than others. As of 2024, some of the dogs with the highest reported bite rates include:
- American pit bull terriers and other pit bull-adjacent breeds
- Rottweilers
- German Shepherds
- Huskies and Husky-adjacent breeds
- Malamutes
- Doberman Pinschers
- Chow Chows
- Great Danes
Many of these aren’t a surprise to experienced dog owners; unfortunately, while the majority of the dogs that fit into these breed profiles aren’t a danger to anyone, enough of them are that their reputation is affected. It’s essential to be cautious and move slowly when meeting a new dog, particularly one from a breed that is prone to biting.
Even if a dog isn’t included on this list, that doesn’t mean it’s automatically safe. Remember, this data is only available due to reported dog bites. Dog bites that do not result in serious damage are much less likely to be reported, but vet techs and other animal professionals report that smaller dogs, such as Chihuahuas, are likely to be aggressive as well. The difference is that their bites are far less dangerous due to their smaller size and weaker jaws.
What California Law Says About Dog Bites
California state law is very clear about an owner’s responsibilities and a victim’s rights after a dog bite. The owner of any dog is liable for the damages suffered by any person who is bitten by the dog while in a public place or lawfully in a private place, including the property of the owner of the dog. Situations falling into the second category include visitors invited to your home, delivery personnel, mail delivery people, and others with express or implied invitation. It does not include trespassers.
California law does not require that a dog be knowingly vicious for a victim to recover compensation. This means that even if a dog has never bitten anyone or shown any signs of aggression in the past, the owner is still responsible for the damage caused by their dog. While some states essentially give dogs “one bite free” before their owners must pay compensation, California is not one of those states.
